The Botanical Garden “Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón” is found in the upper part of the Ex Hacienda de “El Chorrillo”, where CEPE/UNAM Taxco’s campus is located. It was inaugurated in November of 2011 and currently has three collections of plants: a section for medicinal plants, an arboretum, and an area for cacti and succulent plants.

Its main objective is to promote conservation of plant species native to the region as well as from other geographical regions, and to spread knowledge and traditional uses of these plants to the local and academic communities.

In addition to its conservation work, the Botanical Garden also gives environmental education, organizing courses and workshops for the public and especially for schools. In these courses, topics such as ecology and eco-tips such as solid-waste management, composting, and solar dehydrating are discussed, among others.
